Rooted, Built, Established, and Abounding - The Church (Lesson 3)

The Church

Philippians 1:27 (NKJV)

Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ… stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.

The church began in the mind of God. Jesus, our perfect example, gathered disciples before He performed His earthly ministry. He sent them out together to preach the kingdom. When He ascended, they gathered together in the upper room. As they sought to evangelize the world, they worked in tandem with one another. As converts were made, they assembled together for worship, teaching, and ministry. We were not intended to live for God alone. We must strive together.

In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
10 Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Rooted, Built, Established, and Abounding - The Bible (Lesson 1)

The Bible

There has never been another book like the Bible. It is the best-selling and most impactful book in human history. Furthermore, the Bible has been translated into more languages than any other book. What makes the Bible so special?

1. The Bible’s Claim

2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21, 2 Peter 3:2, 15-16

2. Reasons to Believe

A. Historically Accurate

a. Old Testament characters - Over 60 have been either historically or archaeologically identified.

b. Ebla Tablets – This relatively recent discovery lists many Old Testament cities, civilizations, and names.

c. Sodom and Gomorrah – The geological record shows evidence of an ancient earthquake. In addition, the layers of sedimentary rock were melded together by intense heat.

d. New Testament events and characters – The existence of Pontius Pilate, Caiaphas, Nazareth, and many others have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

B. First hand witnesses

a. Prophets and apostles – They were martyred without any material gain for their witness. Why? 2 Peter 1:16

b. The audience – It is one thing to say, “I saw.” It is another thing to say, “You saw.” - Acts 2:22

c. Jewish historian - “At this time there was a man who was called Jesus. His conduct was good, and he was known to be virtuous. And many people from among the Jews and other nations became his disciples. Pilate condemned him to be crucified, and he died. And those who had become his disciples did not abandon his discipleship. They reported that he had appeared to them three days after his crucifixion and that he was alive. Accordingly, he was thought to be the Messiah.” – Josephus

d. Roman historians - In total, nine early non-Christian secular writers mention Jesus as a real person within 150 years of his death. Interestingly, that is the same number of secular writers who mention Tiberius Caesar, the Roman emperor during Jesus’ time.
